Today we got acquainted with the OTS Research Station.  We had breakfast at 6am and then we all broke into our groups and began discussing how and what we are going to do.

In the afternoon, we had a Station overview regarding rules and regulations for all visitors staying on the station site.  We also hike down to the river and we spent about two hours on this trail looking at the habitat, the plants and animals, and the streams and rivers.

Upon return from the river, we had dinner and then we had an evening introductions meeting where all attendees introduced themselves.  Indigenous people from Panama also arrived and that, for me, was the highlight of the day.

We are all beginning to get to know each other, and we are making friends and sharing our cultures with one another.  This is an excellent place to be for cultural exchanges while enjoying the rich and beautiful biota found in Costa Rica.  We are only 5km from the border of Panama, and this alone surprises and amazes me.

Friday, December 14, 2018 Today was a research day for me.  I conducted research (literature review) of similar projects that have looked at secondary succession occurring on abandoned pasture lands in tropical regions.  I was surprised to find that most of the research prior to 2010 was primarily in the Eastern United States on land that has been allowed to become fallow.  I learned today that tropical deforestation has occurred extensively over the past 60 years globally and most of this has been done for agriculture. Deforestation rates are hard to predict, but an it is unquestionably high.  In the 1990s, the estimate provided by Mayaux, et al, 2005 was in the range of 5.8 million hectares per year. In Latin American, the primary reason for converting tropical forest into agricultural pasture is for livestock grazing, and for cash crops such as coffee. 12092018 CRIRE Costa Rica

We arrived in Costa Rica after making a connecting flight from Albuquerque, through Houston, TX.  We arrived in the evening and, after retrieving our baggage and going through customs, we met with Scott at the outside of the terminal.  Scott was ready for us and had vehicles ready for the transport of our luggage and us to the airport.  We disembarked at the airport and we unloaded our bags, the name of the hotel was Hotel Aeroporto, and it is located approximately 6 miles from the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica.  We were all assigned rooms and we were asked to meet at the restaurant in the hotel for dinner at 6pm.  We had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel that evening and we all informally met each other and began talking and visiting with each other over dinner.  Scot told us all to be at breakfast at 6AM in the same location and we were told to get some rest.  We then all went to our respective rooms for the evening to get some much needed rest.  In attendance at this initial m

GPS Point Capture of Adandoned Tropical Grazing Pasture at the Las Cruces Biological Station, Costa Rica

Saturday, December 15, 2018 Today was an exceptionally productive day at the abandoned grazing pasture located in the Las Cruces Biological Station here in Costa Rica.  We had breakfast at the usual time, 6:30AM, and then we recruited two workers to help us in this field work today.  We recruited two young men that are here with their dad from Ahnni Lakota College which is located in eastern Montana, USA; their dad teaches Environmental Science at that college.  Randy and Gabriel are their names and they were very helpful in the work that we needed to get completed today.  We obtained the needed equipment for this outing from the equipment that was brought by Heritage University.  Specifically, we needed GPS units, a weather monitoring instrument for things like wind speed, humidity, temperature and other similar parameters.  We also made sure we had our sacked lunches that we requested the night before at dinner, which is standard protocol here when you are planning to be out in the
